Even with plenty of sunshine, vitamin D deficiency is very common in Pakistan. Studies have found low levels in a large share of adults, especially women. Covered clothing, indoor work, air pollution, darker skin and a diet low in vitamin D-rich foods all play a part.

Why vitamin D matters

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. It keeps bones and teeth strong and supports muscles. Long-term deficiency can cause soft, weak bones (rickets in children, osteomalacia in adults) and adds to the risk of osteoporosis.

Common symptoms

Many people have no symptoms. When they appear, they are often vague:

  • Tiredness and low energy.
  • Bone pain, especially in the back, hips and legs.
  • Muscle aches, weakness or cramps.
  • In children: delayed walking, bowed legs or slow growth.

These symptoms have many causes, so a blood test is the only way to know.

The vitamin D test

The test measures 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25-OH D) in a blood sample. No fasting is needed. Common interpretation (Endocrine Society):

25-OH vitamin DUsual meaning
Below 20 ng/mLDeficient
20 to 29 ng/mLInsufficient
30 to 100 ng/mLSufficient
Above 100 ng/mLToo high (usually from too much supplement)

Some labs report in nmol/L (multiply ng/mL by 2.5). Always check the reference range on your own report.

Your doctor may also order serum calcium to see the full picture.

Treatment and supplements

Treatment depends on how low your level is, your age and other conditions, so the dose should come from your doctor. In Pakistan vitamin D is sold as cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) in tablets, capsules, sachets, drops and injections, often in high weekly or monthly doses. See vitamin D3 brands and their prices.

Important points:

  • High-dose vitamin D is safe when prescribed, but too much can raise calcium to harmful levels. Do not take high doses for months without a follow-up test.
  • Your doctor will usually recheck the level after about three months.
  • Calcium supplements are sometimes added, but not always needed.

Getting vitamin D naturally

  • Sunlight: about 15 to 30 minutes on the arms and face a few times a week, outside the hottest hours in summer, helps many people. Glass windows block the useful rays.
  • Food: oily fish, egg yolks and fortified milk or cereals have some vitamin D, but food alone is rarely enough to fix a deficiency.

Where to get tested

Compare prices on the vitamin D test page, or browse labs in Lahore, labs in Karachi and labs in Islamabad. Many labs collect the sample at home.
